This Week in Kindergarten

We are discovering and exploring many different things this week!  We started off with a book about apples and apple picking.  We examined the parts of the apple and looked at what shape the core makes when we cut the apple a certain way.  We also looked at the seeds inside the core.  We then talked about what the seeds need to grow into an apple tree.  Today we planted the seeds and will be making predictions tomorrow as to which cup of seeds will grow the best.  We completed some apple stamping math art as well.  Pictures to come this week!

We also had fun making shapes on our geoboard pumpkins.  This is a great activity for fine motor and to explore different shapes.  This was a big hit with the students!

Thank you to everyone who signed up to make playdoh.  We will be sending home a schedule in the next few days.

This Friday is our Terry Fox Walk.  Please send your child dressed appropriately as we will be walking outside in the morning.  All kindergarten students will be walking on school property only.

Playdoh

It was so nice meeting all of  you last night.  The kids were very excited to show off their work!  We didn't get a chance to ask for volunteers to make playdoh throughout the year so I will send home a sign up form on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

This week in Kindergarten!

We have had a great week so far! The students are settling into to the classroom and are getting familiar with our daily routines.  We are working on having the children hand in their mailbag independently each morning.  Please remember to send it to school daily as it is our means of communication between school and home.

Today we went to the library and took out a book.  This book should have made it home tonight.  You are welcome to enjoy the book all week but please ensure that it comes back before Wednesday.  Our library day is every Wednesday so in order to borrow a new book, the old book must  be returned.

Many students have been losing their clothing and shoes.  Please label everything!! Things that are left outside are brought inside to our Lost and Found bins.

Scholastic book flyers will be coming home this week.  If you are interested in ordering a book, please send the order form back with your child's name and a cheque made payable to Scholastic Canada.  They do NOT accept cash so only send cheques please.

We will be starting up a Playdoh Club.  The students use playdoh everyday to help with fine motor and to create beautiful masterpieces!  We are in need of volunteers to make playdoh on a weekly basis (it only lasts for a week 😕).  It is very easy to make and I will provide a no fail recipe!! If you are interested in joining our Playdoh Club, I will be sending home a form with more details.  Thank you in advance!

This week in Room 138

It has been a great start to the school year! The kids are all settling nicely and are learning the routines.  We have our snack times and lunch time all sorted out and no one has mistakenly eaten their sandwich for breakfast!! Just a reminder to ensure that no nut products come to school or anything that contains sesame seeds.  We have a severe allergy to nuts and sesame seeds in the classroom.

It has been a busy week so far with discovering and exploring the different centres and activities in the classroom.  We are all working on collaborating with our classmates and spreading kindness in the school.  Mme Vida took the students to the library for storytime today.  They really enjoyed their visit.  This will become a weekly occurance.  More details will come in regards to our assigned day for visits.

Reminders:

With the cooler temperatures in the morning, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately.  We stay outside for outdoor learning first thing in the mornings so a thin sweater or hoodie will keep them warm.

Please send in a change of clothes for your child to keep in their cubby in case of an accident (pants, underwear, shirt and socks).  Accidents do happen in Kindergarten so it's important to have a spare set just in case!

If you have a question or note,  please put it in the communication book.  Keep the book open so we know there's a note for us.  If the book is closed, we will not see the note.

Upcoming Events:

Pizza Night - Thursday,  September 22

Come eat pizza and visit the classroom! The students are very excited to show off their classroom and work so far.  The form was sent home today with the details.  We hope to see you on Thursday!

Welcome to Kindergarten 2016-2017

Welcome to Kindergarten at St. Gabriel Catholic School! We are eager to begin an exciting year full of many wonderful learning opportunities. As your child’s teachers, we aim to create an environment that is both supportive and challenging in order to facilitate learning and ignite the imagination.

1. Communication Book: Your child has been given a mailbag with their name on it. We will use this bag to send home any notes/communication. Please write notes for us in this book provided. For your child’s safety, always send written instructions about changes in your child’s routine (e.g. a different caregiver, or if you will be picking up your child etc.) in the Communication Book. Please check the Mailbag daily for information from school. If you leave a note, have the Communication Book open to that page so that it doesn’t get missed.

2. Quiet time: Please send a small blanket/beach towel that can be left at school for quiet time. We ask that no stuffed animals or pillows be sent in.  Blankets/towels will be sent home to be washed on a regular basis.

3. Shoes and Clothing: A pair of no-slip, non-marking easy to get on sneakers (velcro or elastic closure) are requested to wear in the classroom and gym.  These shoes will remain at school as their“indoor shoes”.  It is also important that your child comes to school in clothes in which he or she can play.  Our classroom will be a busy one where paint, markers, sand, water and outdoor play is encouraged.  Please ensure that all articles of clothing and shoes are labeled.

4. Snacks: Your child will have two snack times as well as a lunch break.  Please send in 2 nutritious snacks as well as a lunchtime meal in labelled reusable containers. Our classroom is nut-free due to severe allergies so please do not send any nut products in your child's lunch. If you send a snack with WOW butter, ensure that it is labeled with a note so we don't mistake it for peanut butter.

5. Oops! Accidents!: Please send a change of clothes (including socks and underwear) to be kept on hand in case of spills or accidents. Label and place them in a plastic bag for storage. If an accident does occur, we will send home the dirty clothes in a ziplock. Please send back more clothing the next day.

6. Birthdays: We recognize birthdays in our classroom and celebrate each child’s special day. We ask that no treats are brought in. This is to avoid interaction with students that may have allergies. We have a tradition that has started where your child can bring in a birthday book to share with the class that day, which can be added to our classroom library.

7. Family Photos: Our classroom has a family tree that students can look at to remind them of home. If possible, please send a family photo with your child. Write your child's name on the back of the photo. These will be returned to you at the end of the school year.

8. Donations: We are always in need of Kleenex and ziplock bags (large size) in the classroom. If you would like to donate any of these items, we would greatly appreciate it.

9. The Blog: Please remember to check in often to get classroom updates and news. Sign up for notifications on the home page. ( roccokinder.blogspot.ca)

We look forward to speaking with you over the next few weeks. We know that the year ahead will be an exciting one with plenty of learning, laughter and growth.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rocco and Mrs. Talebi
