Reminders for the upcoming week

Reminders for the week:

Monday is orange and black day.  We ask that you do not send your child in wearing his/her costume.  Instead, they are welcome to wear orange and black.

Friday was an early reminder of what's to come with boots and wet feet! Many students had wet socks during the morning and had to change into their spare pair.  Some children did not have a spare pair of socks so we had to send them home with bags on their feet.  Please pack a few extra pairs of socks in your child's backpack.

This week in Rm 138

Today we started the day learning a new letter and word of the week.  Our letter and word of the week is "I".  We buttered "I" in our poem and then talked about how it is always an uppercase letter when it is on it's own in a story.   We also learned that a lot of our classmates have an "i" in their name.   The word "vowel" came up and we sang a special song! Ask your child to sing our vowel song to you!

The sk students then had an opportunity to write in their journals.   They did an amazing job sounding out "i" words and even sentences with "I" in it.

Please continue to point out our popcorn words during your nightly reading time.  They are all very excited and proud to find them in the books at school!

Reminders:

1. Wednesday is picture day!!!!

2. We Scare Hunger:  We are collecting non-perishable food for the Kanata Food Cupboard.  October 25th (tomorrow) is the last day.  Please donate if you can.  Thank you for your support!

Playdoh Recipe

Hello Playdoh Club members!

Here's a quick and easy recipe for making playdoh:

  • 2 cups of white flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp of cream of tartar
  • up to 1 1/2 cups of boiling water
Add water slowly and check the consistency.  Let it cool and knead it until it's smooth.

If you would like to make it coloured, add food colouring to the water.

The Week of October 17

We had a great start to the week!  Today we looked at our first letter and word of the week.  Our letter and word this week is the same- the word/letter a.  We started off by looking at the letter and learning the sounds it makes (long a and short a).  Then we looked at our names and stood up if our name had an "a" in it.  Lots of our friends have at least one "a" in their name!  We also came up with a large list of "a" words.  Next we moved on to our poem where we "buttered" our word of the week.  We say that we are buttering the word (as we colour it in yellow) because each weekly word is called a "popcorn" word.  Popcorn words are high frequency words that appear in easy readers and other forms of writing that we will be looking at this year.  They are simple words that are age appropriate for this grade.  The sk students also had an opportunity to write in their journals.  Our goal was to try and sound out a word with an "a" in it or to try and write a sentence with the word "a" in it.  They did an amazing job!!!  We will have a new word and letter of the week every Monday.  Please encourage you children to point these words out while you read to them at night.  It is great exposure and will be beneficial to them in their reading and writing process.

We also looked at numbers today.  We had a challenge to match the numbers on the hundreds chart with the numbers on wooden disks.  The students were really engaged in this task and it was great to hear them using strategies and ideas as to where to place the numbers.

We started to explore symmetry using leaves.  The students were given half of a leaf glued to a piece of paper and were asked to draw the other half to look the same.  Then they were asked to describe their leaf using colours.  Their work turned out amazing and we can't wait to put it up on display.

Thank you to all who signed up for Playdoh Club.  The photocopier has been out of commission but as soon as it's working, we will send an easy recipe to use if you wish.

Reminders:

- Please ensure that your child has a full set of spare clothing at school (shirt, pants, underwear, socks).  Accidents happen so it's always good to have a spare set of clothes.

- Picture Day is on October 26.

This week in Rm 138

This week is flying by!  It has been a very productive week so far!  We are looking at letters and practicing the sounds they make.  Today we looked at the letter a and used different materials to create a's.
We also took our learning outdoors.  The kids collected different types of leaves from Griffin's Grove.  Tomorrow we will use our leaves to create art, write about them and examine them like scientist!
Today we had a Thanksgiving liturgy for our kindergarten students.  The kids were so respectful and did a great job.

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, October 26th will be our picture day.

Pictures from the week so far!

We have been busy exploring nature this week! We found a cricket and decided to observe his movements, create friends for him with playdoh, write about his appearance as well as observe him using magnify glasses.  We will be releasing him tomorrow back into the wild!

This week we have been talking about Thanksgiving and what it actually means.  We shared traditions and talked about all the things that we are thankful for.

In Math, we have been working on number recognition with the junior kindergarten students.  The senior kindergarten students have been working on composing and decomposing numbers.

Today we read a book called "Thanksgiving is About Giving Thanks".  When the students were asked what Thanksgiving means, they had such kind things to share (See pictures for examples).  It melted our hearts!

Thursday we will be making a special turkey to bring home for your Thanksgiving table. The kids are excited to make them!
