This Week in Rm 138

Today was a very productive day full of exploring and creating.  The kids enjoyed painting flowers to help make Spring come quicker!  Their paintings looked so beautiful and have made the classroom feel so cheery!

Our letters of the week are the "sh" blend.  The teachers were amazed at the "sh" words that the kids came up with.   Our word of the week is "she".  The sk students are really coming along with their writing skills and are using their sounds to write great sentences.  I have included pictures of their writing.

We also worked on making ABC books after reading LMNO Peas.  The kids were really focused and loved making their own books.

In Math,  we are working on graphing as well as finding more than one way to make a number.  The students enjoyed using manipulative to compose numbers and explain how they did it.

We talked about the upcoming Lenten Season and how we will be making a Lenten promise for 40 days.  On Wednesday we will be having a liturgy for Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.  Your child will be receiving the ashes during this liturgy.

Reminders:

  • Please ensure that your child has extra socks and a spare set of clothes.
  • Please send in cutlery if needed in your child's lunch
  • Please send back your child's library book by Wednesday

Word of the Week

This week we will not have a letter of the week.  Our word of the week is "do".  We came up with lots of questions using "do" and then the sk students wrote in their journals.  They are doing such a great job sounding out their words and using the word wall to help with their writing.

We are still collecting shoes for Soles for Souls so if you have any shoes that you are looking to donate, please do so.

Reminders:

With the warmer temperatures,  we have been experiencing many soakers and wet pants.  Please ensure that your child has extra socks as well as a full set of spare clothes (underwear included).

Please provide spoons/forks in your child's lunch if it is needed.  Unfortunately we do not have extra utensils in the classroom.

The Week of Feb. 13th

We are looking forward to a busy week ahead.  Tomorrow we will be busy stuffing our newly made love monsters with valentines.  The kids had a blast today decorating their monsters.  Thanks again for sending in your empty kleenex boxes for this activity.

Our letter of the day is "l".  We looked at the letter l and it's sound.   Our word of the week is "love".  We have a song to help us remember how to spell it.  Ask your child to sing it to you.  The kids wrote love notes using our word of the week.

New Snuggle books came home today.  Please ensure that the folders come back every Friday with the book inside.  I hope you are finding this program beneficial for your child.  We are seeing progress as well as more confidence in the children when attempting to sound words out during reading and free writing.

Today we had 10 students away due to illness.  We are working hard to remind the children to sneeze in their elbow, wash their hands after using the washroom and to use a kleenex for their nose.  If you could also remind your child, it would be much appreciated!

On Wednesday, will be celebrating 100's Day.  It's going to be an exciting day full of fun activities involving numbers up to 100!

Our new report cards will be coming home on Wednesday.   This is a communication of the child's learning.  It is a brand new format which is very different from the traditional report card.  It highlights the student's key learning, growth in learning and their next steps.  We hope you enjoy reading them!

Wednesday is Double Lunch Day

                                February 6, 2017
Dear Families,

Welcome to our Double Lunch Day Initiative. The St. Gabriel community would like to help those less fortunate in our community. We are joining together to help The Ottawa Mission by providing lunches for their back-to-work and back-to-school programs. In order to help support those less fortunate, please send in to school a second lunch. These lunches not only help many valuable members of our society, but they also lessen the load of The Ottawa Mission.

How can you participate?

The second Double Lunch Day for St. Gabriel school is this Wednesday, February 8! On this day, we ask that you send your child to school with an additional lunch. The lunches can have perishable and non-perishable items. We ask that they are healthy lunches and that they be packed in a bag that will travel to The Ottawa Mission (brown bag, Ziploc bag, etc.). Feel free to include a thoughtful, spiritual message and/or a hand drawn picture that will be collected separately and sent in their own special container. The lunches will be transported to The Ottawa Mission after the children enter the school. Upon their arrival at The Mission, the lunches will be distributed to the various programs in need. Please see their website for further information http://www.ottawamission.com/

The Mission has asked for a few special requests and additional items in need:
-please do not include mayo on the sandwiches
-winter clothing suitable for adult males (gloves, hats, etc)
-socks

Your support in this initiative is truly appreciated by the patrons of The Ottawa Mission. The staff also sends their thanks. If you have any questions about the Double Lunch Days please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

    Lisa Brennen/Christine Maidment

Our Mission Statement (The Ottawa Mission)

and the lost by providing food, clothing shelter and skills, and offers faith
and hope for building a wholesome life.

Week of Feb. 6th

Our letter of the week is "e".  We talked about the different sounds that this letter makes and talked about it being a vowel.  Lots of the friends in the class have an "e" in their name.  The children were busy finding "e"s in books, flyers and all around the classroom.

Our word of the week is "me".  The sk students wrote some pretty amazing sentences using their phonetic spelling.  See below for samples of their awesome writing.  Please continue to point the popcorn words out during nightly reading.  It is very beneficial for your child.

We are in need of lots of EMPTY kleenex boxes for our Valentine's Day craft.  If you have any, we will gladly take them!!!  Each child needs a box for this craft.

If your child will be sending in Valentine's cards, please have them write only their name on each card and NOT the other students names on the "to" portion.  This will ensure a smooth distribution of cards.  Thank you!

Communication of Learning:   A new form of reporting will  be sent home on February 15.  This brand new version of a kindergarten "report card" is quite different from what some of you might be used to.  I will post a link with more information from the Ministry of Education shortly.

Today in Rm 138

Today we were busy making Valentine cards for veterans.   We talked about ways we show people we care.  The cards we so adorable and will definitely put smiles on  the veteran's faces.
This week we do not have a word or letter of the week.  We are reviewing our popcorn words on the word wall.  Please continue to point out the popcorn words during nightly reading with your child.

Please send in any EMPTY kleenex boxes that you have at home.  We are doing a Valentine's craft that requires one empty kleenex box per child.  Thank you in advance!
