Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all! We hope you had a restful holiday season with the family.  We had a great first day back today!  The kids enjoyed sharing what they did over the holidays and were excited to see their friends.  They were all FULL of energy today!!!

Our letter of the week that we will be focusing on is "n".  We brainstormed a bunch of words that started with "n" or had an "n" in it.  The kids did a great job and we came up with a very big list!  We also incorporated counting and comparing numbers while talking about the letter "n" today.

Our word of the week is "in".  We buttered the word in our New Year poem and then the sk's wrote a sentence in their journal using "in".  They are really working hard at sounding out their words.  Their progress is so amazing to see.  During nightly reading, have your child point out our word of the week. Some jk students are also beginning to engage in the writing process.  If you notice that your child is interested in spelling and sounding out words, encourage them to continue at home in a fun manner ( play hangman, ask your child to spell a word for you, make your own scrabble pieces out of construction paper and spell words together etc)

Raz Kids accounts have been set up for the class and I will send home more information this week on how to access and use it at home.  Raz Kids is a great reading program for the kids to use at home and at school. The books are very age appropriate and interesting.  More information to come soon!

Today, I sent home a weekly reading program for the senior kindergarten students.  The sk's will come home with one book a week.  On the first day, the child will take a picture walk of the story.  This means that they will only look at the pictures to get an idea of what the story is about. On the second day, the parent will read the book to their child.  On the third day, you can read it together.  On the fourth day, your child can try and read it independently if possible or pick out words that they recognize as the parent reads.  These books are short, simple books with high frequency words.  There will also be a tracking sheet where you can write down comments about your child’s reading progress.  Have fun with it.  It is a great way to get a good snuggle in with your child!  Please ensure that the book comes back every Friday because we will be passing them on to another classmate for the following week.

Reminders:
Since the blankets were sent home before the holidays to be washed, some students haven't brought them back.  If you could send them in tomorrow, that would be much appreciated.
With the cold, snowy weather comes wet socks and pants! Please ensure that your child has a full set of spare clothes (including underwear and a few pairs of socks).  Since the students go out for recess at temperatures of -24 degrees and above, please make sure they come to school dressed appropriately.
