Week of March 26th

Our letters of the week are "th" and our word of the week is "the".  We learned that when you put a "t" and an "h" together it makes the sound of thhhhhh and we tickle our teeth with our tongue when making this sound.  The children had great "th" words today!

A big thank you to all the VIP pictures that have been sent in.  They are all amazing and have been enjoyable for us teachers to see and read!  Looking forward to getting started with the kids on this project.  It's going to been a hoot to hear what they think your jobs are!

Today we talked about the Easter story and Jesus' resurrection.  Many students were interested in drawing pictures and writing about Jesus.  We have incredible artist in the class !!!  We will continue to talk about the Last Supper and Jesus' kind act of washing the feet of His disciples.  The children will have the opportunity to wash each other's feet in an act of kindness this Holy Thursday.  Please also check out the new French song, "Dans un jardin".  The children love to sing and hop along.  Just a reminder that there is no school on Good Friday and Easter Monday.  Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter!

Last Friday, we enjoyed "The Big Crunch" by assembling in the gym to enjoy a fun apple story and bite into our delicious apples.  The children had a blast and continued to enjoy the left over apples in the classroom.  Sobey's on March Road were very generous and donated 100 apple for this fun event.  We are lucky to have this generosity in our community!

Week of March 19th

We hope everyone had a lovely March Break!  Everyone seemed well rested and not too many took advantage of quiet time!

Our letter of the week is h and our word of the week is he.  We have been practising using the correct pronouns so our word of the week came in handy today.  Please continue to practise letter recognition and sounds with your child.  It is very beneficial and the children are so excited to share their knowledge of letters during discussions.

We are looking forward to getting started on our VIP project.  We have received a few pictures of parents in their work environment but are still in need of many more.  If you have not emailed your photo, can you please do so by March 30th.  Our goal is to show the children the photos without reading your write up and have them guess what job each parent does. Please email the photos to andrea.rocco@ocsb.ca. Thank you for your participation.  It is going to be a great activity to discuss jobs in our community as well as the importance of our family.

The month of March is Nutrition Month. On March 23rd at 2:30 pm, St Gabriel School will take their BIG CRUNCH. The Great Big Crunch is an annual moment of anti-silence where everyone gets together and bites into crunchy fresh local produce in unison.  Please send an apple to school with your child on Thursday March 22nd so that they can participate in the school wide BIG CRUNCH!

We are looking for pots, pans, strainers, cookie sheets, spoons, scoops etc for our outdoor learning environment.  If you have any of these items and are looking to get rid of them, we would love to take them off your hands and put them to good use at school!

Week of March 5th

Happy Monday! Our letters of the week are "sh" and our word of the week is "she".  The kids came up with a list of great "sh" words.  Our sk students are doing an amazing job attempting to sound words out phonetically.  We always encourage them to write the sounds that they are hearing.  Mrs. T and I do not correct their work and always praise them.  They are showing confidence and enjoyment during free writing and are adding words to their artwork independently.  It is so exciting to see this unfold!

Today we experimented with Google Hangout and video called Mme Roy.  The students were SO excited to see and talk to her.  Mme showed us her new office and answered all our questions.  We will be partnering up with a kindergarten class from Mme. Roy's school (Guardian Angels School) to do pen pals.  Our class will get to meet our new Stittsville friends using Google Hangout.  There are some exciting times ahead for us!

Last week we started drawing the "other half" of us.  The students were given a picture of their face cut in half and they had to draw the other half so that it matched.  We took this opportunity to introduce the word symmetry.  Their artwork is so well done.  If you are passing by our classroom, come have a look at our symmetrical portraits!

We will be talking about people in our community and the jobs that our mommies and daddies do.  A special note was sent home last week (called VIP Project) explaining a project that we will be starting in the month of March.  We will be very grateful for your participation.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the VIP Project.  It is going to be so fun and special for the children.
